Subjects

This new website provides an exciting opportunity for the Society to facilitate on-line discussion on a worldwide basis on specific subjects of the history of engineering and technology. To this end, Subject Forums are being established for members who have a strong interest in a particular aspect of the history of engineering and technology, and who wish to share their knowledge and experience, and pursue their own ‘research’. Each Subject Forum will have its own section within the website.

Subject Forums will span the whole time range of the history of engineering and technology, from the earliest days of structures through to the latest technologies. Potential subjects include Military engineering, Aerospace/ Aeronautical engineering, Medical Engineering, Industrial Design, Manufacturing Processes, Chemical/Process/Nuclear Engineering, Steam and Railways, IC Engines, Power Generation and Distribution, Materials (Ceramics, Polymers, Glass, and Metals), Structures and Computing/Information Processing. This list is not definitive and there is opportunity for members to set up groups in other subject areas where there is sufficient support to make it viable.

Each Subject Forum will be championed by a person of recognised expertise and stature, and will have a leader or moderator to guide its activities and maintain the integrity of its work. Its agenda will largely be driven by its participants, but may also incorporate ideas and issues from associated or linked organisations. Each Forum will be linked to a centre of historical excellence in its subject, and will be associated and work with professional bodies or academic organisations sharing similar interests and goals.

If you are interested in taking a lead in a subject forum, please contact the Executive Secretary in the first instance.
